Vintage style involves more than just buying a vintage dress or handbag at the local thrift or second-hand store. Just like today's styles, vintage fashions were meant to be worn in groups or outfits that complement each other. A pair of elbow-length gloves that match a pair of rhinestone-studded heels, for example. You can wear one without the other, but but you lose much of the effect.
And then there's the issue of period in vintage clothing. This is another area where mixing and matching usually doesn't work. A pillbox hat from the 1920s, for example, just doesn't work with a 1950s cocktail dress. And a 1940s rayon print dress is going to clash with a 1960s beaded purse.
Now this isn't meant to scare you away from trying your hand at vintage clothing. Vintage threads can be a lot of fun, sort of like traveling back in a time machine, and you almost feel like you're living back in the 1920s when you slip on that vintage fur waistcoat. You half expect your husband or boyfriend to appear in a top coat and tails!
One way to learn more about vintage style is to visit vintage clothing shops in your area. The proprietors of these stores are certain to be experts on period fashion, and they can show you clothes and accessories that work together to capture that vintage look you're aiming for. Even if you don't buy anything on the spot, you'll learn a lot more about vintage clothing and accessories.
Another interesting (and fun) way to learn vintage style is to watch old movies from the period! You'll be amazed at the clothes the actors and actresses wore in films from the 1930s, 40s, 50s and 60s. Some make look a little ridiculous today, but others will catch your fancy, and you'll find yourself browsing online auctions and second-hand stores in search of that perfect piece to complete your own vintage outfit.
