There are hundreds of popular hair styles in today's fashion industry, enough to build an entire website just around the topic of hair. There are bob cuts, 80s styles, vintage styles, asymmetric styles, hawk cuts, curly styles, short hairstyles, long hairstyles...
You may or may not have tried many or all of the above. One thing that stands out is the diversity of today's hair style trends. There are more styles available than ever before, and the only limits are your imagination, the ability of your stylist, and your budget!
Just like other fashion trends, hairstyles get recycled over time. What was a popular cut in the 70s, is suddenly today's hot trend, not unlike the return of bell-bottom jeans and tie-died shirts. And today's cuts may fall out of favor, only to re-appear at some point in the future. Or they may be incorporated into another style to create a third, entirely new style.
One thing's for certain: most women feel much more confident when they know their hair looks good. We've all had "bad hair days," and it usually affects our mood in a negative way. On the other hand, when our hair looks great, we feel great, and it makes it much easier to go about our business in a positive way.
Without trying to cover every possible hairstyle available today, we're going to break the most popular cuts into every general categories.
The New Mod - Think "super-fly Beatle". The re-born version of the
classic 50's-60's mod style has shorter lengths and texture in the crown, which
become heavy, almost blunt bangs that skim the eyelashes. Annoying, I know, but
hey...what's a little discomfort in the name of fashion? The back and sides of
the new mod style can range from short to medium with either lots of texture or
distinct bluntness around the hairline.
Disconnected and Asymmetric Cuts - Extreme angles create a sculptural
feel with this hair trend. Blunt edges cut in unexpected places. No blendy-blend
here. This trend is very edgy, but can be tamed down by going with an asymmetric
cut (one side longer than the other). The angle of the cut can range from a
gentle slope to a plummet, with one side very short, graduating to chin-length
as it comes around the head.
One of this falls more flattering hairstyle is the asymmetry bob. With it’s
extremely angled sides and full front this style looks good on lots of face
shapes. After washing, simply use some volumizer at the roots and blow dry with
a round brush and lift as you dry.
Old Hollywood Glitz and Glamour - The vintage Hollywood glamour look is characterized by smooth, voluptuous waves, and deep side parts. The best techniques to get the look are pin curling and finger waving. Top it off with a beautiful vintage accessory on one side or at the back. Look for items with rhinestones or feathers, especially ostrich feathers...we'll be seeing alot of those.
80's Inspired - You remember the 80s, don't you? If not, you can still recapture that time by choosing an 80s inspired hairstyle. This usually involves shorter layers across the top, lots of curls and waves, and an emphasis on movement and texture.
Mohawks and Faux-Hawks - Never thought you'd style your hair in a mohawk? Think again! This is a trend usually reserved for the younger crowd, but don't let that stop you not-so-young gals from giving it a try! And don't worry, you won't have to shave the sides of your head to make this look work.
This look is immensely versatile, possible to mimic on any hair length. If your hair is short, use a wax or gel and simply direct it forward and up in the center. For a temporary mohawk on longer lengths, back comb a rectangular section from your front hairline to your crown. Slick the sides down close to your head, either behind the ears or secure these sections straight back and underneath the back sections. Instant faux-hawk...hair today...gone tomorrow!
Emo Hair - Like many other popular hair styles, emo hair began as a trend
seen in the music industry. It's a relatively new style that first appeared in
the 1980's and became more mainstream in the beginning of the new millennium.
Emo hair is a "unisex" style with a very specific look -- short-ish in the back,
graduating down to a long, heavy, sweeping fringe that covers one eye. Straight
hair is best for this look. If your hair has some wave, you'll benefit from
using a straightening iron.
Create your own trend - if you'd not sold on any of the above styles, or just want to try something different, you can incorporate elements from two or more looks and create your own. But you might want to get together with your stylist first before trying something drastic -- since you might be stuck with it for weeks or even months to come.
Hair Care Tips
Regardless of your current hair length or style, it's not going to look its best
unless it's healthy, shiny and strong. Nothing looks worse than a great hair
style that's lost in a frazzle of split ends. Or hair that's dull, limp, or
lifeless. And if you're going gray and you don't want to color your hair,
that's fine, but understand the tradeoffs, and the fact that people may think
you're older than you really are.
Tip #1 -- Use Styling products with care. Some of today's products
are quite strong, and can cause unintended results of used in excess.
Always read the instructions carefully, and use the smallest amount necessary.
If disaster does strike, and you don't have time to wash your hair again, you
can try pulling it back and going with a "slicked back" look instead.
Tip #2 -- Use a lemon rinse on oily hair. If you hair is
chronically oily, you can mix lemon juice with 4 parts warm water and pour over
your scalp after shampooing, then rinse thoroughly. If you hair's really oily,
you may have to repeat this treatment once or twice per week.
