Fashion Trends

You might be thinking that it's almost impossible (and very expensive!) to keep up with the latest fashion trends. After all, there seems to be a new fashion trend debuting almost every week, let alone every season, and just when you think you've got it all figured out, a new trend comes along to make your wardrobe suddenly (and hopelessly) obsolete.

There's a reason for this, of course. Designers and clothing manufacturers only make money if people are constantly buying new clothes and accessories. It wouldn't be good for business if we consumers wore the same clothes and accessories season after season, year after year, so they're constantly bringing out the newest, latest and greatest styles.

Now not everyone is a fashionista or a slave to the latest fashion trends. We all have our favorite outfits that we hang onto, no matter what the season. A favorite pair of jeans, or a handbag that seems to go with everything we own.

But it does make sense to at least be aware of the latest fashion trends. And I'm not talking about what a runway model wore last week at a show in Milan -- most of those dresses never the major department stores, not at price most average people can afford anyway.

I'm referring to broader fashion trends that work their way down into the general population. Colors, materials, length of skirts, dress for work and for play.

Here are some fashion trends that are expected to be on everyone's "must have" list for 2009:

  • Safari Styles. Yes, they're back, those tan shirts and khaki shorts are set to make a comeback this year. If you have a Banana Republic store nearby, stop in and see what's on sale this spring.

  • Bracelets. Stylish jeweled and and jangly bracelets are must-have accessories in 2009, fashion experts predict.  Go with cuff or stacking bracelets in the spring and summer.

  • Color me neutral. Neutral colors, along with tropicals and floral prints, are sure to be in style in '09.

  • Stick with the low heels. High platforms are out this year, but you can't go wrong with low-platform heels and peep-toe shoes.

  • Big splashy logos are out. With the economy in a slump, conspicuous consumption is a no-no for 2009. Exchange the flash for more subtle accessories.
