A quality designer handbag should be both functional and a timeless work of art.
The classic black Chanel bag, for example, is as stylish and fashionable today
as it was when Coco Chanel first introduced it back in the 1950s. And as luxury
bags have risen in popularity over the past 10 years, they’ve infused the entire
fashion industry with quality and high-level workmanship.
A genuine designer handbag may cost you a little more than a knock-off, but this
is an accessory you’ll enjoy for years, and maybe even pass on to your childen
when you’re gone, so think of it as an investment. This really is a case of
getting what you pay for.
After all, a designer handbag should be more than just something to carry your
keys and your makeup kit. If your clothes are the main course of your wardrobe,
then your accessories are the desert, the topping on the cake. They can make or
break your look. Nothing ruins a great outfit faster than a cheap pair of shoes
or a bag purchased at Wal Mart.
You may not realize it, but for most of history, women didn’t even carry bags.
In past centuries, dresses were full and had large pockets sewn into the seams.
It was only in the 18th century that gowns became slimmer and sleeker, with no
place for pockets. The first purses were simple drawstring bags that hung from
the wrist. Then, as time went on and women became more independent, there rose a
need for the larger, multi-pocketed handbags of today.
Now we have designer handbags for every occasion. There are canvas or straw bags
for summer, leather totes and satchels for work, a fanny pack for running and an
elegant clutch for that special evening out. And of course there are designer
totes, shoulder bags, hobos, bowler bags, spy bags and more.
Top designer brands include Coach, Prada, Louis Vuitton, Chanel, Fendi,
Burberry, Versace, Cole Haan and many more. Prices start in the low hundreds and
go on up into the thousands for high-end luxury bags. You’re paying for that
designer logo, of course, but also an item that’s made from top quality
materials and fittings, the best craftsmanship, and will last for years and even
decades of regular use.
On the other hand, if you can’t afford a top designer handbag right now, don’t
despair. You could try renting one for a speical occasion, or buy one used
online or in your local consignment shop. It will be money well spent, and your
wardrobe will love you for it.
